When I woke up in Hong Kong the first thing I did was pull back the curtains to take in the view of Victoria Harbor. For anyone who loves city skylines, the view from Kowloon across the Harbor to Hong Kong Island is glorious. Bug agreed– she couldn’t get enough of the view day or night.
We had our breakfast and then set out to try to find a tour. We knew that Hong Kong was hot and humid, but I don’t think any of us were prepared for just what that meant. At 10 am we were all soaked through with sweat after just a five minute walk to the Star Ferry Terminal. Wow, was it hot! We bought tickets for the double-decker tour bus, and then walked down to catch the ferry to Central on Hong Kong Island.
The Star Ferry is super cheap and a definite must-see (G will cringe to see that cliche!). Here’s Bug waiting for the Ferry, and a few picutures from the short trip across the Harbor:
We grabbed a Red Line bus from Central and headed for Victoria Peak. Again, while I was on the bus I could swear I had never been so sweaty in my life! Still, it was worth it to ride the Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak. Here’s Bug in the tram:
And a few views from the viewing deck atop the Peak:
If you thought Bug didn’t look entirely happy today, you are right. The fatigue and heat caught up to her today, and she hit the wall:
We decided to look for a little slower paced part of Hong Kong Island, and hopped a Green Line bus to Stanley, which is on the far southern side of the Island on the South China Sea. We had a late lunch at an Italian restaurant, and took in some of the stunning scenery.
We had all hit the wall by this point, so we grabbed the Green Line bus back to Central, hopped on the Ferry, and headed back to the room for some R&R and swimming in the pool.
For those who don’t know, Hong Kong is the host of a nightly light show at 8 pm over the Harbor, which uses the skyscrapers’ built in lights along with lasers. Bug can’t resist a gaudy, big spectacle like that, and started getting the room ready as soon as we got back at 3:30, meaning, she shoved every chair in our teeny tiny room in front of the window. Luckily the show didn’t disappoint. At the time Bug dubbed the show her favorite part of the trip. You can see the excitement on her face!
Our next day in Hong Kong: Schlepping out to Lantau Island to see the Big Buddha!
